Welcome back, I hope you all had a lovely Easter break.
Our topic this term is Global Gardens. We will be looking at all different aspects of the food that is grown around the world and what plants we can eat. Our trip to Kew Gardens will also help in our research towards our topic.
Literacy: As always our priority will be ensuring that children can read and do so fluently and with expression. Using phonics (Read Write Inc) we will develop our word recognition and fluency in both spelling and reading. Our emphasis in writing will still be on forming sentences and developing our knowledge of punctuation including statements, question marks and exclamation marks, moving on to suffixes and prefixes.
Numeracy: Using Maths Makes Sense we shall continue to develop our mathematical knowledge This term we will be revisiting addition maths stories using the column method and including vertical subtraction with 4 digit numbers; revisiting 1d, 2d and 3d shapes; understanding mass and capacity; money and its value and telling the time.
Science: Children will be exploring different fruits and vegetables, including what they taste like, where they grow and what part of the plant we can eat. We will also be doing a bit of gardening and planting our own veg!
Art and DT: We will be looking at the French painter Monet and his famous paintings of Waterlilies. Also we will be veg printing and making chocolate biscuits!
R.E: We will be looking at Judaism and how Jewish people worship.
History/Geography: We will be looking at food through the ages and the histories of Sugar, Tea and of course Chocolate.
Computing: We will explore the internet whilst the theme will be E-Safety.
PSHE: We will be discussing our rights as children, kindness and friendships and also road safety.
PE: In PE we will hopefully be able to get outside and begin to play Tennis.
Homework: Will continue to be set in grid form. This term there will be no spellings. As all the children in year 1 will be expected to sit the phonics screening check in June, I would ask if you could help them by looking at the phonics books that were given out on parents day and reinforcing their sounds.
As usual if you wish your child to have milk every day an order form is available from the office and as always please label all uniform clearly. PE is on a Wednesday and Friday the children must have kit in schools on these days.
If there are any questions or queries please do not hesitate to ask.
