Eagles’ Parent Letter
Parents of Year 2
Dear Parents
Welcome back to Eagles and the second half of the Autumn Term. Below is some information on aspects of the curriculum that we will be covering between now and Christmas. Most of our learning will be done through focusing on our Topic which is called ‘Famous for Five Minutes’. We will be mainly looking at famous artists and inventors.
Literacy: Our priority will be ensuring that children can read and do so fluently and with expression. Using phonics (Read Write Inc) we will develop our word recognition and fluency in both spelling and reading. Our emphasis in writing will still be on forming sentences and developing our knowledge of punctuation. In spelling we will use our sound knowledge along with rules to help our spelling.
Numeracy: Using Maths Makes Sense we shall continue to develop our mathematical knowledge practising column addition and subtraction we will look at numbers with four digits, learning what each digit represents. We will begin to look at measure including capacity. Recapping our knowledge of 2D and 3D shape we will explore their properties learning about right angles.
Science: Children will be exploring light and its sources, looking at the discovery of electricity and how we use it. Naturally this means we will discuss safety in the home and explore circuits.
Art and DT: Firstly we will look at Van Gough and how his life affected his paintings. Then we will look at Da Vinci and his inventions. We will hopefully produce our own parachutes.
R.E: Looking at the lives of various Saints we shall learn what it means to be called a Saint. Then we will explore the important festival of Christmas.
P.E: We shall use the playground where ever possible as well as the Hall. Developing our ball skills we will practice passing and playing in a team. In Gymnastics we shall concentrate on dance and rhythm.
History: Firstly we shall look at the story of Guy Fawkes. Then we will discuss Remembrance and how important it is to remember those who are not famous.
We will look at famous communicators starting with William Caxton and attempt to recreate his printing press.
Computing: We will look at how we use text to communicate our ideas. The children will input text and learn about the functions of the keyboard. They will also learn how to insert pictures.
PSHE: (Personal, Social, and Health education) The children will try and look at things from each others perspective. They will be encouraged to express their feelings and develop ways of resolving conflict.
Homework: Specific homework will be once or twice a week to reinforce class activities. It should not take more than 10-15 minutes but it is a good start to develop the habit of focusing and concentration.
Spelling will also be sent home weekly.
REMINDERS:
If you wish your child to have milk every day an order form is available from the office and as a final plea please label all uniform clearly. P.E is on a Monday and Friday the children must have kit in schools on these days.
This is a long letter but hopefully it gives you an idea of what we will be doing this Term. Our main aim as well as working is to have lots of fun.
Thanks for your support,
Mrs O’Callaghan and Mrs Edgar
