Year 3 Parent Letter
Parents of Year 3
Dear Parents
Welcome to the second half of the Autumn Term. Below are some details of what we will be covering until Christmas. Most aspects of the curriculum will be taught through topic teaching. This term we will be continuing to learn about the Romans while also looking at the Science topic of Humans and Animals.
Literacy: Building on the skills we have, we are going to focus on reading aloud with an emphasis on expression and entertaining our listener. We still explore texts meaning and gain a deeper insight to the author’s intentions. Focusing on Poetry we shall explore rhymes, rhythms, alliteration and onomatopoeia. Our aim is to really focus on sentence structure so that we always use capital letters, full stops and have sentences that make sense. In creative writing we will extend vocabulary so that our descriptive writing really paints pictures! We will also continue with our weekly spelling both in class and at home.
Numeracy: Developing our key skills already gained; we will be developing our Arithmetic, Geometry, Data and Measure and Reasoning skills, using Maths Make Sense. We will continue to focus on learning all of our Times Tables and begin to realise that division is the opposite action to multiplication.
Science: We are continuing our topic of the story of rocks for the first few weeks of term before becoming dietary experts! We will be looking at what is healthy and what is not. We will be trying some tasty healthy fruits and vegetables, so please let us know of any allergies as soon as possible. We are going to explore the digestive system creating our own stomachs and intestines.
Art & D.T: This term our focus is about materials. We will be designing and making our own Roman coins from clay. We will also design and make our own Roman shields and crowns.
R.E: Our focus will be on Christianity looking at some of the main stories told by Jesus and learning them so that we can share these stories with others. Obviously we will concentrate on the festival of Christmas and the birth of Christ.
P.E: Will be on Wednesdays and Fridays. We will be going swimming alternative Fridays. We will be doing lots of exciting things such as taking part in a lacrosse workshop with a specialist coach.
Music: As well as learning songs for our Christmas Production, we will be learning how to compose our own music using the computer.
History & Geography: Our History topic will continue to be the Romans and the Romans in Britain with our starting focus being Geography. Using a range of atlases we will identify areas that the Romans conquered and label them on maps. We will also look at Roman towns in Britain, exploring the history of places names and the Roman roads that link them.
Computing: We will be being very cross curricular! Firstly we will use computers to explore areas of the Roman empire. Then we will use technology to help us film interviews with characters of Roman myths. We will finish by using the internet to help us compose our own Christmas music.
PHSE: (Personal, Social, and Health education) We will focus on emotions and listening to others. Discussing anger we will discover what makes us angry and then come up with strategies to help us not get angry and calm down if we do.
Homework: Specific homework will be given once or twice a week to reinforce class activities. It should not take more than 15-20 minutes and it is meant to develop the habit of focus and concentration. The main areas will be literacy especially reading and spellings; maths linked to the subject that we are focusing on and sometimes science and or another subject to enhance our in class activities.
REMINDERS:
Please make sure children have a PE kit in school at all times, our PE days are usually Tuesdays and Fridays but often we have events on other days. They will also need a swimming costume and towel for their swimming dates which are: 6.11.15, 20.11.15 and the 4.12.15, 18.12.15
As a final plea please can ALL uniform be clearly labelled.
This is a long letter but hopefully it gives you an idea of what we will be doing this term. Our main aim as well as working is to have lots of fun.
Thanks for your support,
Miss Parker
