Eagles’ Parent Letter

Dear Parents

Happy New Year!  Welcome back to Eagles and the first half of the Spring Term. Below is some information on aspects of the curriculum that we will be covering between now and February half term. Most of our learning will be done through focusing on our Topic which is Fire.

Literacy:  Our continuing priority will be ensuring that children can read and do so fluently. Using phonics (Read Write Inc) we will develop our word recognition and fluency in both spelling and reading. In our topic work our emphasis in writing will still be on forming sentences and developing our knowledge of punctuation. Building on skills gained we shall explore Fire using both Myths and reality. Using this as our base we will be able to look at non fiction and fiction. We will also use the Great Fire of London to help us develop diary and autobiographical writing.

Numeracy: Using Maths Makes Sense we will be learning about place value and reinforcing our knowledge of times tables and number pairs. Taking our skill of being able to do column addition, even with tricky numbers, we will begin to apply this knowledge to column subtraction. We will continue to use explicit and implicit information when working with data and aim to extend our knowledge of shapes and their properties.

Science: Our subject this term is Materials and why certain materials are used for specific things. We will look at some famous scientists and how they discovered new materials and look at why it is important to recycle. Linking to our topic the children will be examining the dangers and uses of fire. This will give them the chance to observe different materials and how they can be changed through heat or cold.

Art:  We will use collage to express fire and ice, we shall create 2d Tudor houses, create our own coat of arms and finish by designing and building a class Chinese Dragon.

R.E: Learning more about Christianity we will look at the role of the Church in the community. We will learn all about the Lord’s Prayer and learn all about Baptism.

P.E: We shall use the playground where ever possible as well as the Hall. Developing our ball skills we will practice bat skills and playing in a team. In Gymnastics we shall concentrate on dance and rhythm, creating a Chinese Dragon dance.

History: Our main topic will be the Great Fire of London how it started and spread. We aim to act out the fire, create bread and write newspaper articles.

Computing: We will be working with Be Bots. Exploring how things can be programmed and how this enables us to use technology. Added to this we will explore filming and music programming.

PHSE: (Personal, Social, and Health education) The children will explore the different ways in which they learn and think about different goals and how they would like to achieve them.

Homework: Specific homework will be given once or twice a week to reinforce class activities. It should not take more than 10-15 minutes but it is a good start to develop the habit of focusing and concentration.

REMINDERS:

Please label all uniform clearly. P.E is on a Monday and Friday the children must have kit in schools at all times.  This should include a navy tracksuit trousers and jumper for use in colder weather.

This gives you a brief idea of what we will be doing but if you have any questions please feel free to ask.
