Parent Letter Year 3

Parents of Year 3

Dear Parents

Welcome to the second half of the Spring Term. Below are some details of what we will be covering this term. Most aspects of the curriculum will be taught through topic teaching. Our main topic is going to be the Tudors with a special focus on Explorers and looking at the Geography as much as the Historical discoveries. Our Science this Term will look at Light.

Literacy: Building on the skills we have, we are going to focus on reading aloud with an emphasis on expression and entertaining our listener this will be helped greatly by our focus on play-scripts. Focusing on Play scripts we look at dialogue and explore what is meant by stage directions. As our topic is the Tudors we will explore Shakespeare’s plays, albeit in a simplified form. Our key focus will still be on sentence structure so that we always use capital letters, full stops and have sentences that make sense, this term we aim to advance things with the use of paragraphs and complex sentences.

Spelling will continue but with a focus more on rules and patterns.

Numeracy: Developing our key skills already gained; we will be developing our Arithmetic, Geometry, Data and Measure and Reasoning skills, using Maths Make Sense. We will continue to focus on learning all of our Times Tables and begin to realise that division is the opposite action to multiplication. Will also concentrate on learning to tell the time and understanding weights and measures.

Science: Discovering what light is, we will explore light sources, how light is reflected, mirrors, shadows and transparency. There will be a Tudor element as we will discuss how the Tudor sailors used the sun and stars to navigate and tell the time.

Art & D.T: Using our DT knowledge this term we will aim to create a brooch worthy of Elizabeth I and to recreate our own Tudor rose and portraits.

R.E: Our focus will be on Christianity looking at rules, such as the ones given to Moses in the form of the Ten Commandments and The Easter Story.

P.E: Will be on Tuesdays and Fridays. We will be going swimming alternative Fridays. We will be concentrating on gymnastics.

History & Geography: Our History topic will be the Tudor Explorers. We will begin with the Tudor myth of the world being flat and continue to look at who discovered what and how. Exploring what countries they discovered will enable us to learn where countries are and build on our existing knowledge of Europe. We will use maps and globes to explore the world as they thought it was then compared to how it is today.

Computing: To gain a greater understanding of what different people like to read we will be using PowerPoint to create animated stories. We shall learn how to make objects and text move, how to insert sound and have our movements and sounds transfer from slide to slide.

PSHE: (Personal, Social, and Health education) We shall be feeling good about ourselves focusing on our strengths. This will encourage the children to have faith in their own abilities and know that they can achieve anything they put their minds to!

Homework:

But daily reading is still expected and there will be weekly spellings to do!

REMINDERS:

Please make sure children have a PE kit in school at all times, our PE days are usually Tuesdays and Fridays but often we have events on other days. They will also need a swimming costume and towel for their swimming dates which can be found on the weekly newsletter.

As a final plea can ALL uniform be clearly labelled with your child’s name.

This is a long letter but hopefully it gives you an idea of what we will be doing this term. Our main aim as well as working is to have lots of fun.

Thanks for your continued support,

Claire Parker
