Parents of Year 5

Dear Parents

Welcome to the first term of Year 5!  Below are some details of what we will be covering this term. Most aspects of the curriculum will be taught through topic teaching. Our main topic this term is going to be ‘Great Writers’ with a special focus on Shakespeare and The Tempest. On the 7th November, we will be performing our own version of the Tempest at the Quarterhouse in Folkestone, as well a special performance in school. This is an amazing opportunity for the children who will be doing everything from acting and creating music to designing the set and programmes! More details to follow!

Literacy: Building on the skills we have, we are going to focus on reading aloud with an emphasis on expression and entertaining our listener this will be helped greatly by our focus on play-scripts. Whilst studying play scripts, we will look at dialogue and explore what is meant by stage directions and how these can be used. We will be creating detailed and powerful character descriptions, focusing on sentence and paragraph structure. We will also be touching upon Shakespearian language and expression.

We will be learning about rules and patterns in spelling.

Numeracy: Developing our key skills already gained; we will be developing our Arithmetic, Geometry, Data and Measure and Reasoning skills, using Maths Make Sense. We will continue to focus on learning all of our Times Tables and division facts and continue to practice maths skills which are also life skills, such as telling the time and converting measurements.

Science: Our science topic this term will be sound. We will be learning to identify different sounds, exploring sounds instruments make and why and understanding that sounds are caused by vibrations but that these vibrations are not always directly visible. We will learn that vibrations from sound sources require a medium (solid, liquid or gas) through which to travel and will be investigating how the pitch and loudness of sounds can be changed.

Art & D.T: This term we will be making containers using different materials with Mrs Simmons on Fridays. We will also be designing and creating artwork around The Tempest in class.

R.E: Our focus for the first term will be on Judaism where we will learn all about birth, Bat Mitzvah, marriage, death and death rituals.

P.E: Will be on Wednesdays and Fridays. We will be concentrating on netball for the first term. We will be going swimming alternative Fridays.

History & Geography: Our History and Geography topic will be focused around our main topic, ’Great Writers’. We will learn where in the world the first evidence of human writing can be found, the tools that were first used in writing and how these have developed over time. We will also be researching writing and writers from different places and time periods.

Computing: We are going to be using the interest for research purposes. We will learn that not everything you read online is true and how to find trustworthy sources of information. We will collect facts, then using what we have found and an office programme, create a fact file.

PSHE: (Personal, Social, and Health education) Our focus this term will be beginnings. We will dicuss our rights, responisbilites and values at school and what we could do if we ever felt uncomfortable or had a problem.

Homework: Homework this term will mostly be focused around our production of ‘The Tempest’ with some weekly maths revision as well. Daily reading is also expected and there will be weekly spellings to do!

REMINDERS:

Please make sure children have a PE kit in school at all times, our PE days are usually Tuesdays and Fridays but often we have events on other days. They will also need a swimming costume and towel for their swimming dates which can be found on the weekly newsletter.

As a final plea can ALL uniform be clearly labelled with your child’s name.

This is a long letter but hopefully it gives you an idea of what we will be doing this term. Our main aim as well as working is to have lots of fun.
