Parents of Year 3
Welcome to the second half of the Spring Term. Below are some details of what we will be covering this term. Most aspects of the curriculum will be taught through topic teaching. Our topic this term is going to be Evacuees, with a focus on what life might have been like for children in the 1940s.
Literacy: Building on the skills we have, we are going to focus on reading aloud with an emphasis on expression and entertaining our listener. We will start the term by writing explanation texts about a creature of our own creation! We will then look evacuee stories, which we will use to inspire own our story writing. We will be focusing on how to add description to really paint a picture in the readers mind. We will also be developing our use of paragraphs and adverbs. There will be a continued focus will on sentence structure, ensuring we always use capital letters, full stops and have sentences that make sense. Spelling will continue with a focus more on rules and patterns.
Numeracy: Developing key skills we have already gained; we will be practising and developing our arithmetic, geometry, data and measure and reasoning skills. We will continue to focus on learning all of our Times Tables with division facts. Will also spend time learning how to tell the time and understanding weights and measures.
Science: Discovering what light is, we will explore light sources, how light is reflected, mirrors, shadows and transparency. There will be a WWII element as we will discuss how Britain’s Blackout began on 1st September 1939, two days before the outbreak of war.
Art & D.T: Using our Art and DT knowledge, this term we will be learning how to cross stitch! We will be refining our sketching techniques, sketching toys from WWII and will also be designing our own evacuee propaganda poster.
R.E: Our focus will be on Christianity. We will look at Christian salvation, the Easter Story, the last Supper, and the story of Good Friday.
P.E: Will be on Tuesdays and Fridays. We will be going swimming alternative Fridays. This term we will be continuing with gymnastics. Working in groups, will be putting what we have learnt together to form and then perform routines.
History & Geography: Our History and Geography topic will be the Evacuees. We will look at why and who was evacuated and where they were sent. Learning what life might have been life for evacuees during WWII. We will compare city and country living. We will learn about rationing, school and what children did for fun during the 1940s. We will also learn which countries were involved in the war and locate them on a map of the world using an atlas.
Computing: Our focus will be on using the computer to conduct research. We will learn about e-safety and how to find trustworthy information online. We will also improve our skills on a range on office programmes including word and powerpoint, as well as use Purple Mash to support our topic work and TT Rocks and Mathletics to support our learning in maths.
PSHE: (Personal, Social, and Health education) We shall be feeling good about ourselves focusing on our strengths. This will encourage the children to have faith in their own abilities and know that they can achieve anything they put their minds to!
Homework: Homework related to classwork will be given throughout the term. Practising times tables and daily reading is always encouraged.
Please make sure children have a PE kit in school at all times, our PE days are usually Tuesdays and Fridays but often we have events on other days. They will also need a swimming costume and towel for their swimming dates which can be found on the weekly newsletter.
As a final plea can ALL uniform be clearly labelled with your child’s name.
This is a long letter but hopefully it gives you an idea of what we will be doing this term. Our main aim as well as working is to have lots of fun.
Thanks for your continued support,
