Welcome to Year 3! Your child is now part of the juniors and this first term will be all about settling into new routines and becoming more independent in their learning. We are looking forward to an exciting year, and I have been busy planning a range of topics to engage the children in their learning. Mrs ‘McAllister is remaining with the class and we will be welcoming Mrs Humphrey to our team.
Topic: Our topic this term is The Romans. We will learn about the Roman invasion of Britain and Boudicca’s rebellion, along with endeavouring to answer any questions that the children come up with themselves. This is an exciting period of British history and I will be encouraging the children to ask questions and to actively engage with this topic.
Art: This term our art will be linked to our topic and our work in science. We will be studying Roman mosaics and fossils as part of our Rocks and Soils learning. We will use a variety of media to help create our artwork.
Science: Rocks and Soils is the area of learning we will be studying this term. We will be carrying out investigations and the children will work in small mixed ability groups to do this. This subject lends itself to a ‘hands on’ approach and I will be encouraging all children to take an active role.
Numeracy: The focus of this term will be place value and number. We will be ensuring that the children have a good grasp of these areas so that we are able to progressively build on their knowledge and understanding. We will use manipulatives where necessary to help children to understand and will follow the ‘maths mastery’ approach to learning. I am keen that the children have a solid foundation in-order to build upon. As ever, times tables will have an important role to play in ensuring your child feels confident in number. We will be focussing on fluency in recounting times tables and have regular activities to encourage participation and home learning.
Literacy: We will begin Year 3 by continuing to refine our grammar and spelling expertise as well as improve our writing skills. All of our lessons will be linked to our topic work (The Romans) and in particular Pompeii and Roman Myths. The children will have plenty of opportunities to write at length and to refine their writing. Handwriting practise will be offered to those who need it and for those who improve and maintain a good standard of presentation a pen license will be awarded. This will be the first time children will be able to use a pen in their books and marks a milestone for them to achieve this year.
R.E: Our big question this term is What is it like to follow God? As always, we will relate this to children’s own lives and beliefs.
P.E: Will be on Tuesdays and Fridays. We will be going swimming alternative Fridays. (Dates to be forwarded) This term we will be concentrating on Netball, learning various passes and attacking and defending skills and techniques. Also, an introduction to lacrosse is planned.
ICT: Our first topic is online safety. We will teach the children how to make sensible choices when online and work through some age appropriate scenarios to reinforce understanding and awareness.
P.S.H.E: Our topic is New Beginnings and will explore the changes that children will experience in this first term of a new school year.
PLEASE make sure your child has their FULL PE kit in school at all times and that they have their swimming kits on the appropriate days (alternate Fridays throughout the term). PE is a vital part of the curriculum and children hate to miss out when they do not have the correct kit with them.
Finally, I have asked the children to complete two pieces of homework this term. I will be sending the options home with them this week.
Thanks for your continued support,
