Year 1 Parent Letter Stone Age

Dear Parents/Carers

Happy New Year! We hope you had a lovely Christmas and wish you well for 2019. Our topic this term is the Stone Age. We will learn what the world was like during this time and understand how we know what we do from clues our ancestors left behind. We will learn about different aspects of Stone Age life and about some of the animals that lived during the prehistoric era, including woolly mammoths!

Literacy: Our priority will be ensuring that children can read and do so fluently and with developing expression. Using phonics (Read Write Inc) we will develop our word recognition and fluency in both spelling and reading. In class we will look at books linked to our Stone Age topic. Our emphasis in writing will still be on forming sentences and developing our knowledge of punctuation including exclamation marks and question marks.

Numeracy: We will be continuing to learn and practise reading and writing numbers up to 100. We will also be practising counting in 10s, 5s and 2s, looking at place value and adding and subtracting 2 digit numbers. We also aim to expand our knowledge and understanding of 2d & 3d shapes and money, time and measure.

Science: This term in Science we will be learning all about animals. We will learn about different types of animals, their habitats, food chains and hibernation. There will also be links to our Stone Age Topic as well learn about animals that lived during this time.

Art and DT: We will look at examples of the first human art and think about how art makes us human. We will discover the materials that were used to paint and draw early cave art, the clothing people wore and the tools they used. We will also create some sunrise and sunset Stonehenge pictures.

R.E: Mrs Cadwallader will continue to teach R.E. in Year 1 next term where we will learning more about Christianity, with the theme being ‘Creation’.

History/Geography: This will be Topic based and will include going back in time and comparing early humans to present day humans. We will look at where people lived, and how we know all this from the clues early humans left behind.

Computing: We will look at how to use computers sensibly and safely. We will also be using Purple Mash.

PSHE: This term we will be discussing ‘Goals’ and what we mean by this and thinking of goals we would like to achieve and how we can do this.

Homework: We will continue with the homework grids based on our learning this term. Children can choose activities from the grid to take on as their homework.

If you wish your child to have milk every day an order form is available from the office and as always please label all uniform clearly. P.E is on a Wednesday and Friday, the children need their kit in schools on these days.

If there are any questions or queries please do not hesitate to ask. Thank you for your continued support.
