Spring Term 3:
Topic: Our new area of learning this term will be Rainforests. We will be linking this work to our daily literacy hour and this will enable children to use the knowledge about rainforests to help them write informed accounts of the habitats and animals that live there.
Art: Our art will be linked to our topic. We will study the work of Henri Rousseau to help us re-create some forest scenes. We will use a variety of media to help create our artwork.
Science: We are continuing with our learning about Healthy Eating this term. We will be carrying out investigations and the children will work in small mixed ability groups to do this. We will approach our learning through the role of a ‘personal trainer’ considering aspects of fitness and diet.
Numeracy: The focus of this term will be measurement, including money and length. We will use manipulatives, where necessary, to help children to understand and will follow the ‘maths mastery’ approach to learning. Towards the end of this term we will start our work on fractions, building children’s understanding and confidence in this area of maths. As ever, times tables will have an important role to play in ensuring your child feels confident in number. We will be focussing on fluency in recounting times tables and have regular activities to encourage participation and home learning.
Literacy: Our writing tasks will predominantly be linked to our rainforests topic. We will write fact files and reports with an emphasis on applying our individual writing targets to improve standards. These targets will obviously vary and some are specific and others are more general. However, the children will be able to focus on their own writing, within the whole class tasks. We will continue to practise our spellings and to use the strategies we have learnt so far to help with independent writing. Guided reading sessions will continue weekly and those children who need more practise will be heard on a one-to-one basis. I would like to take this opportunity to ask you to support your child at home with regular opportunities to read, as part of our joint approach to improving reading fluency and comprehension skills.
R.E: Our topic is Sikhism. We have already started to learn about this religion and to consider some of the similarities to other faiths.
P.E: Will be on Tuesdays and Fridays. We will be going swimming on alternate Fridays. (Dates to be forwarded) This term we will be concentrating on dance and multi-skills.
ICT: Our area of learning is internet research and communication. These skills will be integrated throughout other lessons also.
PLEASE make sure your child has their FULL PE kit in school at all times and that they have their swimming kits on the appropriate days (alternate Fridays throughout the term). PE is a vital part of the curriculum and children hate to miss out when they do not have the correct kit with them.
Thanks for your continued support,
