The Owl who was Afraid of the Dark

In preparation for next week when they become Owls, Ducklings did a whole day learning all about owls.  They found out that the smallest owl is called an Elf Owl and is only 10cm tall, the largest, The Great Grey Owl can grow to 84cm!

They then found out that the colour of their eyes tells us whether they are nocturnal or diurnal hunters.  Following out fact gathering we focused on Barn Owls as they live locally.

They reenacted the story of ‘The Owl who was afraid of the Dark’ with real indoor fireworks and singing round a camp fire.  They then did owl based writing and maths.  Finally they created owl magnets, owl masks and even got owl tattoos!

The children were also very brave themselves, they explored the dark by going in a dark tent and wearing blindfolds.  Most of them agreed with Plop the owl that dark can be fun and exciting.

Another bonus which they all loved was that they got to spend the day with Tiki!
