Today was the moment we have all been waiting for in Year 4…
We finally unwrapped our mummified tomatoes! The children were ever so excited to peel the bandages off their tomatoes. Firstly, we looked at the one that we didn’t fill with salt. It felt a lot lighter and we were very apprehensive about what was hiding inside. To our surprise, all that was left was a small piece of shriveled tomato skin!
The children were then allowed to take the bandages off their own tomatoes- this was very exciting! To our surprise the tomato remained fully intact and held its shape. The skin was little paler than the original bright red colour and most tomatoes had decreased in weight by around 10-15 grams.
We had a great discussion on why we thought this had happened and how salt preserves things. The children found it quite fascinating that it actually worked as we had left them for just over 8 weeks!
