Dear Parents of Owls,
I hope you all had a lovely summer (despite the sun only just deciding it wants to come out)! The children have settled in very well, they have remembered classroom rules and routines and seem very happy to be back at school with their friends. I have also been super impressed with their amazing reading, writing and math skills – well done Owls!
This term we will be learning all about Space and Our Solar System.
Literacy: Our priority will be ensuring that children can read and do so fluently and with developing expression. Using phonics (Read Write Inc) we will develop our word recognition and fluency in both spelling and reading. In class we will look at books, such as “Beegu” by Alexis Deacon, linked to our Space topic. Our emphasis in writing will be on forming sentences using finger spaces, full stops and capital letters.
Maths: Our focus this term is place value and addition/subtraction. We will be working with numbers up to 20 by counting objects, ordering numbers, comparing numbers and thinking about the tens and ones in each number.
Science: This term we will be learning all about animals, including humans, on Earth. We will learn about our bodies and our senses, as well as the different types of animals.
Art and DT: We will be designing, making and evaluating our own rockets to send into space.
R.E: Mrs Cadwallader will continue to teach R.E. in Year 1. The theme for this term is ‘Understanding Christianity’.
History: We will be looking into the history of the first man on the moon, Neil Armstrong.
Computing: We will learn how to log on and off a computer, as well as how to use computers sensibly and safely. We will also be using Purple Mash.
PSHE: This term we will be thinking about choosing to do the right things at school.
Home Learning: The children will be sent out with a new home learning grid in their books every first Friday of a new term. If there are pieces of work that you would like us to see, please hand in their books every Monday and they will be marked and handed back out on Friday. Your child is welcome to decorate their Home Learning books however they wish. The children will have a unique username and password for Numbots and Sumdog stuck into their home learning books. Please feel free to access these Mathematical games online at home to support their number progression.
– If you wish for your child to have milk every day, please email the office.
– P.E is on a Friday; the children need their kit in schools every Friday.
– Please remember to read daily with your child and record any engagement of reading at home in their reading record books.
– Please send your child into school every day with their blazer and school headwear (caps/berets).
– Please ensure all uniform is labelled clearly.
– Please remember to bring a water bottle in every day.
– Please make sure there are no peanut products in packed lunches.
If there are any questions or queries, please do not hesitate to ask.
