Year 5 Autumn Term 1

Dear Parent/Carer,

Welcome back!  I hope that you have had a restful summer and are now ready to start the new school year. We will be easing gently into the school year by getting re-acquainted and assessing the children’s needs in regards to any lost learning due to the restrictions they have had to endure during the last year.

Topic: Our topic for this term is The Maya Civilisation. We will look geographically at where the Maya lived and how they survived in the forests. Also addressing the big question on why they vanished so suddenly.

Science: We are going to start to investigate the Solar system and the movement of the Earth and Moon.

Maths: We will be focusing this term on place value and ascertaining any gaps that the children need assistance with.

Literacy: In Literacy we will be looking at travel writing around the world and linking it to our class reading book ‘The Explorer’ by Katherine Rundell.

Art/DT: Our art will be based around our topic and will include 3D Mayan mask making.

RE: Our focus this term will be on Knowing God and exploring the question; ‘What does it mean if God is loving and holy?’

Computing: We will be investigating and understanding E-Safety.

PSHE: Our topic of conversation will be TEAM – Together Everyone Achieves More.

PE: These lessons will be on Mondays and Fridays. This term we will be concentrating on OAA and team building.

Homework: Homework grids will be sent out each term. Children choose an activity from the grid each week to take on as their homework. Spelling will be sent home on a Friday to be learnt for the following Friday.

 REMINDERS:

PE is on a Monday and Friday the children must have a named PE kit in school at all times.

If there are any questions or queries please do not hesitate to ask.

Yours faithfully

Mrs Edgar
