Year 2 Topic Letter

Dear Parents / Guardians,

Hello! Welcome to year 2. I hope you all had a happy and safe summer. It has been lovely meeting the children and showing them around their new classroom. All of the children have settled in well and are all raring to learn.

This term we will be learning about pirates.

English: In reading we will continue to learn our RWI sounds and then move onto developing their comprehension skills. In year 1, children across the whole of the nation, are tested on their phonic skills and their ability to read both real and ‘alien’ words. However, due to troubles of the last 18 months, the children who are currently in year 2 missed out on taking their phonic test while they were in year 1. Therefore, the government has decided to test the year 2 children in November and should they not reach the appropriate level, re-test in June. So we will spend lots of time developing all the children’s phonic skills, including sending words and sentences home for the children to practice. In writing we will continue to develop our handwriting, word knowledge and sentence structure. We will learn how to write character descriptions, begin to learn the terms, adjectives, nouns and verbs and enjoy writing exciting pirate stories.

Maths: The main learning this term will be number recognition, number ordering and number separation. We will begin using numbers up to 20 but quickly progress to 50 and beyond.

Science: We will be exploring the topic of materials and their uses. This will involve grouping and labelling different materials in the environment and exploring their different properties.

History / Geography: We will explore the history of pirates, answering many of the questions the children asked about pirates. We will also begin learning about the seven continents and the five oceans, naming and locating the four countries of the UK and the capital cities etc…

Art / DT: We will explore different pictures related to the sea, use the work of famous artists to inspire us and create different pirate related art.

PE: This term we will focus on gymnastics and bench ball. PE will take place on a Monday and a Friday. Please ensure your child has their full PE kit in school.

Computing: This term the focus will be upon keeping safe online. This will involve using Purple Mash. All the children have a PM login (along with other online applications) which the children can access at home.

RE: Mrs Cadwallader will continue to teach year 2 on a Friday. This term we are learning about creation.

Home learning: Each term the children will receive a new grid; from which they can choose activities to complete. Please encourage your child to try to complete as many as they are able to complete. Children are able to create their own activities in addition to those on the grid.

  • PE is on Monday and Friday.
  • Please remember to read with your child daily and write it in their reading record books. We will try to change them as often as possible.
  • Please send your child into school with their full school uniform each day. Please ensure it is all labelled.
  • Please remember to bring a water bottle each day.
  • Please make sure there are NO NUT products are in packed lunches.

Thank you in advance for your support this year. If you have any questions or queries, please do not hesitate to ask.

Best Wishes,

Mr O’Neon, Mrs Reeve and Mrs McAllister
