Dear Parents / Carers
Happy New Year! We hope you are all well and have had a good Christmas. We have missed all the children and we can’t wait for this term.
We welcome Mrs Giles to the year 2 team this term.
This term we will be learning about The Great Fire of London.
English: In reading we will focus on developing the children’s comprehension skills. This term most children will stop following the RWI (Read Write Inc) scheme and will focus on guided reading using class based books, extracts and poems. Those children who remain in RWI will continue to bring RWI books home each week. Over these next two terms it is important the children read their home reading books most evenings. This will help the children’s reading develop and build their confidence. Please remember to sign your child’s reading record book each time you hear your child read.
Maths: The main learning this term will be multiplication and division, statistics, basic skills and time.
Science: We will be exploring the topic of living things and their habitats. We will be looking at living and non-living things, exploring the habitats around the school and wider environment, searching for microhabitats and the insects which live there.
History / Geography: We will explore the history of The Great Fire of London. We will look at the history of the events, explore Tudor houses, St Pauls Cathedral, firefighting then and now.
Art / DT: We will explore building Tudor houses, sketching charcoal pictures, clay models, junk modelling and making bread.
PE: This term we will focus on gymnastics and New Age Kurling. PE will take place on a Monday and a Friday. Please ensure your child has their full PE kit in school.
Computing: This term the focus will be upon creating pictures. This will involve using Purple Mash. All the children have a PM login inside their reading record books.
RE: Mrs Cadwallader will continue to teach year 2 on a Friday.
Music / French: Mrs Brookes will continue to teach music and Mr Brinkley French.
Home learning: Each term the children will receive a new grid; from which they can choose activities to complete. A large number of the activities will be online based, using purple mash. These will be set as 2Dos. Please encourage your child to try to complete as many as they are able. Children are able to create their own activities in addition to those on the grid. We will also begin to use google classrooms each week to send spellings and challenges home. This is new for year 2, so please look out for an email on how to log into your child’s google account.
- PE is on Monday and Friday.
- Please remember to read with your child daily and write it in their reading record books. We will try to change them as often as possible.
- Please send your child into school with their full school uniform each day. Please ensure it is all labelled.
- Please remember to bring a water bottle each day.
- Please make sure there are NO PEANUT products in packed lunches.
Please can you send in Junk model materials, for example cereal boxes, small boxes, tissue rolls etc..
Please download the attached home learning grid for this topic.
Thank you in advance for your support this term. If you have any questions or queries, please do not hesitate to ask.
