Term 5 Year 6

Dear Parents/Carers,

I hope you have had a restful break and are ready for the start of summer term.

The first two weeks of this term will be very much getting your child SATs ready which will take place May 9th-May 12th.  We will be practising papers and of course keeping it light hearted and fun! It would be greatly appreciated if you could urge your child to partake in some revision in the lead up as there has been no homework set. There are some practice papers available online but below are some websites which we have been engaging with at school, so your child will be familiar with these.

We have started our new Literacy topic this term which is Shakespeare. We are looking at his play ‘The Tempest’. Our writing outcomes from this will include diary entries, newspaper reports and formal letters. We will be looking at Shakespeare’s life and work and even attempt to write our own soliloquys in the style of Shakespeare.

In Maths we are consolidating skills learnt over the duration of year 6. This involves place value, fractions, percentages and decimals, time and properties of shape.

Our Science topic this term is ‘Living things and their habitats’. We will be looking at how plants and animals are classified based on their observable characteristics and also the process of adaptation.

In RE this term, our big question is ‘ Is it better to express religion through art and architecture or charity and generosity?’ We will be looking at different types of religious creativity and the value of scared buildings and art.

Our Topic this term is Indus Valley. We will be looking at how and where the Indus Valley civilization settled and the importance of The Indus River. Our art this term will be based around our topic and the children will create Indus Valley inspired sculptures using wire, tin foil and mod roc.

In PE our focus is football and we will be looking at specific skills in dribbling, passing and tackling.

In PSHE this term, we will begin to look at transition and moving on.

Notes- Please ensure your child has a full PE kit in school at all times. Trainers may be worn for PE but ideally black/navy.

If your child is completing homework electronically, please encourage them to use Google Classroom to upload this. It is a great way of being able to share their fabulous homework with the whole class.

If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to ask me.

Thank you for your continued support.

Mrs Buchanan
