Year 5- Autumn Term 1

Dear Parent/Carer,

Welcome back to Year 5!

I hope that you have had a restful summer and are now ready to start the new school year. I am very much looking forward to getting to know your children and having a fun filled year!

Topic: Our topic for this term is The Maya Civilisation. We will look geographically at where the Maya lived and how they survived in the forests. We will also be looking at Mayan gods and godesses and the different parts of Mayan life they symbolise.

Science: We are going to start to investigate the Solar system and the movement of the Earth and Moon. We will be carrying out lots of fun practical activities whilst finding out more about our amazing solar system!

Maths: We will be focusing this term on place value and ensuring the children have a secure knowledge within this area. We are  also going to work on arithmetic skills.

Literacy: Our class text is ‘The Explorer’ by Katherine Rundell which links with our Literacy unit of travel writing. We will also begin to develop our shared writing skills further.

Art/DT: Our art will be based around our topic and will include 3D Mayan mask making.

RE: Our big question this term is ‘What does it mean if God is loving and holy?’ We will explore this further by looking at a variety of biblical texts and linking them to the Christian belief in God.

Computing: We will be investigating and understanding E-Safety.

PSHE: Our focus for the term is ‘Being Me’. The children will gain an understanding of how their behaviour can affect others as well as how to find their own voice and share opinions appropriately.

PE: These lessons will be on Mondays and Fridays. This term we will be concentrating on OAA and team building.

French: We will be revisiting the French we have learned in previous years and looking at the theme of ‘All around town’.

Homework: Homework grids will be sent out each term and be stuck into your childs homework book. Please note, the grids are only a guide. If there is something that your child is eager to do and it is not on the grid- this is fine! Please encourage your child to be creative.  Spellings will be sent home on a Friday to be learnt for the following Friday. A spelling menu will also be stuck into your child’s homework book. This menu is a bank of  fun activities to help your child learn spellings.

 REMINDERS:

PE is on a Monday and Friday the children must have a named PE kit in school at all times. PE is such a vital part of the curriculum and it is such a shame when the children have to miss out due to missing kit.

Children should be reading at home on a a daily basis. Your child has a reading record book and it would be greatly appreciated if you could hear them read aloud regularly.

If there are any questions or queries please do not hesitate to ask me.

Yours faithfully,

Mrs Buchanan
