Owls – Parent Letter: Term 1
Dear Parents and Carers of Owls,
I hope you all had a lovely, sunny summer! We’ve had a great first day getting to know each other. The children have settled in very well, they have remembered classroom rules and routines and seem very happy to be back at school with their friends. The children are very fortunate to have Miss Hayward and Mrs Reeve supporting them throughout the year.
The children’s learning now transitions from the Early Years Framework to the National Curriculum so it is a little more structured than before, however we will ensure they transition smoothly through fun, hands on learning.
Literacy: Our priority will be ensuring that children can read and do so fluently and with developing expression. Using phonics (Read Write Inc) we will develop our word recognition and fluency in both spelling and reading. In class we will be looking at a particular text, which the children will be introduced to next week! We will be learning the text through Talk For Writing (T4W) and the emphasis in writing will be on forming sentences using finger spaces, full stops and capital letters.
Maths: Our focus this term is number value within 10. We will be working with numbers up to 10 by counting objects, representing numbers, ordering numbers and comparing numbers.
This term our topic learning will be focused around Space and Our Solar System.
Science: We will be learning all about Humans. We will learn about our bodies and our senses.
R.E: The theme for this term is: Understanding Christianity and God.
History: We will be looking into the history of the first man on the moon, Neil Armstrong.
PSHE: This term we will be thinking about ourselves, learning right from wrong and looking at the NSPCC: pants rule.
French: In French will be learning about basic greetings.
Art and DT: In Art this term, the children will be creating moon collages inspired by Alan Bean (an astronaut who was part of Apollo 12 and was the forth man on the moon). He died in 2018 but he used moon dust and parts of the Apollo 12 spacecraft to add texture to his pieces! And they will also study Peter Thorpe an illustrator who also creates abstract space themed paintings. The children will be taught Art by Mrs Giles.
Computing: The children will learn all about online safety, including how to log in and log out. The children will be taught this by Mr O’neon.
Home Learning: The children will be sent out with a new home learning grid in their books every first Friday of a new term. The children are encouraged to do at least one piece of work a week. If there are pieces of work that you would like us to see, please hand in their books by Tuesday and they will be marked and handed back out on Friday. Your child is welcome to decorate their Home Learning books if they wish. At the back of their home learning books, there is a spelling grid. Please practise the spellings each week at home. We will be carrying out weekly spelling quizzes.
REMINDERS:
– P.E is on a Friday; the children will need to come into school wearing their PE kits. PE kits are therefore not kept at school.
– Please remember to read daily with your child and record any engagement of reading at home in their reading record books.
– Please send your child into school every day with their blazer and school headwear (caps/berets).
– Please ensure all uniform is labelled clearly.
– Please remember to bring a water bottle in every day.
– Please make sure there are no peanut products in packed lunches.
If there are any questions or queries, please do not hesitate to ask.
Best Wishes,
Miss Philpott, Miss Hayward and Mrs Reeve
