Year 2 Parent Letter Autumn Term 1
Dear Parents / Guardians,
Welcome to Year 2 I hope you all enjoyed the summer. I am really looking forward to getting to know your children and working with them this year. This term our topic will be ‘Pirates’ with lots of our learning linked to this. We will celebrate all our learning this term with as pirate dress up day at the end of term. Date TBC!
English: In reading we will continue to learn and practise our RWI sounds, whilst also developing our reading comprehension. In writing we will continue to improve our handwriting, word knowledge and sentence structure. We will learn how to write interesting descriptions and begin to learn the terms adjective, noun and verb.
Maths: Maths will be taught based upon the White Rose scheme. We will start the term looking at number recognition and place value. Then we will look at addition and subtraction followed by shape. We will begin using numbers up to 20 but quickly progress to 50 and beyond.
Science: We will be exploring the topic of ‘Animals Including Humans’. We will understand that humans change as they grow and learn about what makes us healthy, including the need to exercise and eat a varied diet.
History / Geography: We will explore the history of pirates, with a focus on pirates during ‘The Golden Era of Piracy’. Using atlases and maps, we will begin learning about the seven continents and the five oceans of the world. Will also learn about human and physical features of the world.
Art / DT: Our art will be linked to our Topic of Pirates. We are going to be using different materials and techniques to create and explore sea and pirate related art.
PE: This term we will focus on football. PE will take place on a Monday and a Friday. Please ensure your child has their full PE kit in school.
Computing: Computing will be taught by Mr O on Fridays although we will still visit the computer suite at other times during the week. During these times, we will learn how to stay safe online, how to use certain computer programmes and we will use the online learning subscriptions we have at school.
RE: This term we have a focus on the religion Christianity. We will be learning about the Christian creation story.
Home learning: Each term the children will receive a new grid; from which they can choose activities to complete in their homework book or any other way that suits the work. Children are able to create their own activities in addition to those on the grid.
Daily reading, phonics practise and beginning to learn times tables would greatly support the learning and progress of your child.
Thank you for reading this long letter. If you have any questions or queries, please do not hesitate to ask.
