Year 4 Parent Letter – Autumn Term 1

Dear Parent/Carer,

Welcome to year 4!

I hope you’ve all had a lovely summer and are looking forward to an exciting school year ahead. This autumn term year 4 will be learning all about Ancient Egypt.

Literacy: Our class novel this term is ‘The secrets of a sun king’ by Emma Carroll which will be linking to our Ancient Egypt topic. The children will be developing their writing skills by exploring dairy entries and newspaper reports. The children will also be improving their grammar and comprehension, as well as developing their shared writing skills.

Numeracy: In maths will be focusing on place value as well as addition and subtraction. The children will also be learning even more of their times table facts up to 12×12. Year 4 is an important year for times tables as the children will be required to sit a multiplication test towards the end of year 4.

Science: This half term our topic for science is Sound, so we will be looking at how sound is made and the different components.

Topic: We will be learning all about Ancient Egypt. The children will be learning about different Artefacts, the River Nile, Pyramids, Mummification, Hieroglyphics and the different foods produced.

Computing: We will be writing for different audiences and therefore improving processing skills.

R.E: In R.E we are going to be learning about the Christians story of the ‘Creation of the world’.

French: This term in French the children are going to be learning about ‘All around town’.

Music: In music the children will be preparing songs for the Harvest Celebration. Also, the children will be learning how to play the violin as a whole class throughout year 4.

Art: In art the children will be exploring the Art Elements of Colour, Form and Line. They will be creating a sculpture of a Scarab Beetle, using clay, to link to their topic of Ancient Egyptians. They will be looking at historical secondary sources to draw and design their own Scarab Beetle whilst exploring directions and widths of line. When planning their decoration, they will explore patterns and colours seen in artefacts discovered and dating back to the Ancient Egyptian time period.

P.E: We will be doing Hockey, Swimming and Lacrosse. Hockey will be every Wednesday and Lacrosse will be on Fridays when the children are not swimming. Full PE kits need to be in school at all times!

Homework: Homework grids will be sent out each term. Children will choose an activity from the grid each week to take on as their homework. Spelling will be sent home on a Monday to be learnt for the following Monday. Children should be reading at home on a daily basis and it should be recorded in their yellow reading records. Reading and simply enjoying books at home with your child will help further their development.

If there are any questions or queries, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Yours faithfully

Miss Giles
