Natural Dyes

The theme of Art this term in Year 3 is Cave Art, linking to their topic of Stone Age to Iron Age. This week’s Art lesson involved extracting colour from different fruits and vegetables. The children had blackberries, strawberries, beetroot, mint, purple cabbage and turmeric to explore. The classroom, as you can imagine, smelt amazing. The children loved seeing the colour they could get from crushing and rubbing the different fruits and vegetables into their paper. The children were able to name the colours but were also comparing the different tones and shades. The purple cabbage gave not only purple but different shades of blue creating a galaxy effect. We looked at how we could make a colour lighter and darker too.
