Term 2 Year 2 Ice Explorers

Dear Parents / Carers,

Welcome to Year 2 I hope you all enjoyed the autumn break. This term we will be learning about Ice Explorers, focusing on Ernest Shackleton. We will also be very busy learning and practising our Christmas play!!

English: In reading we will continue to learn and practise our RWI sounds, whilst also developing our reading comprehension. In writing we will be looking at diary entries and think about how we can add description to really paint a picture in the reader’s mind. We will also continue to practise using capital letters and full stops and other punctuation to show sentences.

Maths: Maths will be taught based upon the White Rose scheme. This term our focus will be on addition and subtraction. We will look at number bonds and fact families. We will add and subtract 1 and 2 digit numbers before looking at solving missing number problems.

Science: We will be exploring the topic of ‘Animals and Habitats’. We will be looking at different habitats, what animals need from their habitats and how they are able to survive there.

History / Geography: We will be learning about Ernest Shackleton’s expedition to the South Pole on his ship, Endurance.  We will learn about the polar regions of the Arctic and Antarctica and about the indigenous peoples of the Artic.

Art / DT: Our art during the week will be linked to our Topic of Ice Explorers.  We will also be busy creating many magnificent Christmas crafts and Mrs Giles will teach Art on Fridays.

PE: This term we will focus on netball and we will continue to have a specialist teacher on Fridays.

Computing: Computing will be taught by Mr O’Neon on Fridays.

RE: This term we have a focus on the religion Christianity. We will be learning about the Christian beliefs around incarnation.

Home learning: Each term the children will receive a new grid; from which they can choose activities to complete in their homework book or any other way that suits the work. Please allow children the freedom to complete any of their own ideas for activities in addition to those on the grid.

Daily reading, phonics practise and beginning to learn times tables would greatly support the learning and progress of your child.

Finally, when we do PE this term, it will mostly be on Monday and every week on a Friday. Please send your child into school in their full school uniform each day except Friday when they will need to wear their P.E. kits all day. Please ensure it is all clearly named.

Thank you for reading this long letter. If you have any questions or queries, please do not hesitate to ask.

Mrs Honzik
