Year 3 Term 2 Parent Letter

Dear Parent/Carer,

We hope that you have had a lovely half term and managed to rest up ready for a busy Term 2! We have been busy planning a range of topics to engage the children in their learning and will provide them with a homework grid, to choose from over this term.

Topic/Geography
For this term our topic will be The UK. We will be imagining travelling all around the UK, learning about key features of the country, flags, populations, surrounding seas and rivers as well as famous landmarks, hills and mountains. We will be using stories written by authors born in the countries that make up the UK to excite and engage.

DT:
This term we will be learning about mechanical systems and will be studing pneumatics and creating their own pneumatic toy. The children will have to select appropriate equipment and materials to build a working pneumatic system and assemble their pneumatic system within the housing to create the desired motion.

Science:
We will begin this term by completing our learning on Rocks and Soils before beginning our new topic Animals including Humans. We will be learning about what makes a healthy diet and how we can keep ourselves healthy. The children will be learning about nutrition and the different food groups and what they do for our bodies.

Numeracy:
The focus of this term will be addition and subtraction and ensuring that the children have a secure method for both of these operations. We will progress to multiplication and division towards the end of the term. As ever, times tables will have an important role to play in ensuring your child feels confident in number.  We will be focussing on fluency in recounting times tables and have regular activities to encourage participation and home learning.

Literacy:
This term the children will be focusing on creating a Non-Chronological Report with countries of The UK as the main theme. The children will learn about the features of this style of writing, research facts about a specific country and look at how paragraphs can be used to structure writing. We will continue to use the Talk For Writing approach to help children secure how to write in this style. The children will learn about using fronted adverbials and the importance of using commas after these, as well as continuing developing their understanding of using conjunctions and adjectives for effect. Handwriting practise will continue to be a key focus for this term.

R.E:
Incarnation is our theme this term and our big question is What is the Trinity?  As always, we will relate this to children’s own lives and beliefs.

P.E:
Will be on Mondays and Fridays. We will be going swimming alternative Fridays. In class, this term we will be concentrating on Dance. PLEASE make sure your child has their FULL PE kit in school at all times and that it is clearly named.  PE is a vital part of the curriculum and children need to have the correct kit with them.

IT:
Our topic this term is coding.  As part of this topic the children will learn about using flowcharts, timers, using repeat as a function and debugging their code. The children will be working towards creating their own interactive scene.

French:
This second term the theme will be ‘All About Me’ and will be learning about colours, clothing, classroom instructions and body parts.

Homework and Spellings:

The children will be asked to complete at least two pieces of homework this term, with the option of completing more if they wish. The children can bring in their completed homework on any day and we often have  homework celebration on a Friday where they can present their homework to the class and it is then filed in their homework folder.

This term we will upload the homework options to our Google Classroom. Your child should be able to access their Google Classroom by logging in to Google with their details. If you need any help then please do let us know, we will be happy to assist.
An additional paper copy of the homework will be sent home in their contact book.

Spellings will also be put in their contact book and uploaded to Google Classroom. We ask that you please continue to encourage them to write out their spellings and complete extra activities at home. The new spellings will be uploaded each week to our Google Classroom and you will also find different activity ideas there too.

The children will be quizzed on their spellings each Monday and new spellings will then be set.

This term there is also a weekly Maths and SPAG activity mat that the children can complete if they wish, in addition to their homework. Please make sure they bring it in when completed or upload a photo to the Google Classroom.

The children will be sent home with their new Google Classroom login details in their contact books by Friday 4th November. If your child does not have their login by then please do let us know.

If you have any questions or concerns then please do not hesitate to get in touch. We look forward to working with you together this term.

Many thanks for your continued support,

Mr O’Neon, Mrs Purver and Mrs Crockford.
