Year 3 Term 3 Parent Letter

Dear Parent/Carer,

Happy New Year!

Let’s see what fun and adventures we can get up to in 2023!

We hope that you have had a lovely, cosy Christmas and managed to celebrate in your own special way. We would all like to send a massive thank you for all the thoughtful cards and presents that you gifted, we were really touched and they were very much appreciated.

Topic: We will be learning all about Pompeii and the Roman Empire. We will be looking at the historical importance of the eruption of Mount Vesuvius and the impact it has had on knowing about the past. Alongside this, we will also be learning about the Romans and the development of the Roman Empire. We will have a KIC theatre session later this term and this will definitely be a term highlight and help bring history alive!

Art: This term we will be inspired by the works of Andy Warhol and will be developing our own volcano themed ‘Pop Art’. We will be looking at how to replicate his classic ‘Pop Art’ style with block printing.

Science: We will be continuing with our Animals including Humans topic and will be continuing to extend our nutritional knowledge from the previous term and extending it by exploring the purpose of the skeleton. The children will be learning about human skeletons as well as animal skeletons, how they are similar, how they are different and what each part of the skeleton does.

Numeracy:  This term we will begin our unit on Multiplication and Division and will be focusing on multiplying and dividing by 3, the 3 times table, multiplying and dividing by 4, the 4 times table, multiplying and dividing by 8, the 8 times table, comparing statements, related calculations, multiplying 2-digits by 1-digit and dividing 2-digits by 1-digit.
As ever, times tables has an important role to play in ensuring your child feels confident in number.  Please continue to help support your child at home by focusing on the fluency of recounting times tables.

Literacy: This term we have ‘Escape From Pompeii’ by Christina Balit as our English focus text. This story is set in AD79 and looks at the eruption of Mount Vesuvius from the perspective of two children who are best friends. It is a short book that is beautifully illustrated and it will give the children a unique insight into the world of Pompeii. We will be using this book as a stimulus for poetry, recounts and narrative writing.

R.E: Our topic is Salvation and the Big Question we will explore is: Why do Christians call the day Jesus died ‘Good Friday’?

French: This term we will be continuing to learn about colours, clothing and body parts.

P.E: Will be on Tuesdays and Fridays, but we do ask that children have their P.E kits in every school day. We will be going swimming alternative Fridays. This term we will be exploring a unit of gymnastics and using the equipment in the hall.

PLEASE make sure your child has their FULL PE kit in school at all times and that it is clearly named.  PE is a vital part of the curriculum and children need to have the correct kit with them to participate safely.

Homework and Spellings

The children will be asked to complete at least two pieces of homework this term, with the option of completing more if they wish. The children can bring in their completed homework on any day and we often have homework celebration on a Friday where they can present their homework to the class and it is then filed in their homework folder.

This term we will upload the homework options to our Google Classroom. Your child should be able to access their Google Classroom by logging in to Google with their details. If you need any help then please do let us know, we will be happy to assist.
An additional paper copy of the homework will be sent home in their contact book.

Spellings will also be put in their contact book and uploaded to Google Classroom. We ask that you please continue to encourage them to write out their spellings and complete extra activities at home. The new spellings will be uploaded each week to our Google Classroom and you will also find different activity ideas there too.

The children will be quizzed on their spellings each Monday and new spellings will then be set.

This term there is also a weekly Maths and SPAG activity mat that the children can complete if they wish, in addition to their homework. Please make sure they bring it in when completed or upload a photo to the Google Classroom.

If you have any questions or concerns then please do not hesitate to get in touch. We look forward to working together with you this term.

Thanks for your continued support,

Mr O’Neon, Mrs Purver and Mrs Crockford.
