Year 5 Term 3 Parent Letter

Dear Parent/Carer,

Wishing you a very happy new year! We hope you have had a lovely Christmas break and the children are refreshed and ready to have lots of fun!

Literacy: We will be reading our class novel ‘Goodnight Mr Tom’ by Michelle Magorian linked to our topic of WW2. We will also be reading ‘Rose Blanche’ and writing poetry based on this.

Maths: We will be recapping multiplication, division and fractions. We will also be looking at perimeter, area and statistics.

Topic: We will be continuing our learning of WW2 by looking at how the war ended, what it meant for Britain and how it was celebrated with VE day.

Geography: We are looking at Rivers; from source to sea and The Water Cycle.

Science: Our focus is Properties and Changes of Materials.

RE: Our focus this term will be on People of God and exploring the question; ‘How can following God bring freedom and justice?’

Art: We will be looking at an artist called Henry Moore and thinking about WW2 drawing.  Children will be looking at drawing with form and taking inspiration from Moore’s Shelter Drawing and  using biros, charcoal and was resist techniques to draw with form.

PSHE: Our focus this term is ‘Celebrating Differences’.

French: Our topic this term is ‘Food Glorious Food!’

PE: Our lessons will take place on a Tuesday and every other Friday. We will be covering gymnastics and cricket.

Homework: Homework grids will be sent out each term. Children choose an activity from the grid each week to take on as their homework. As always, these grids are just a guide. Please be creative and encourage your child to do something that excites them! Spellings will be sent home on a Monday to learn for the following Monday. The children have been reminded of their Purple Mash logins and I will set some fun times tables tasks weekly for your child to take part in. Just a short 10 minutes a few times a week can make all the difference.

As always, please do not hesitate to ask me any questions.

Yours faithfully,

Mrs Buchanan
