Year 2 Term 5 Parent Letter
Dear Parents / Carers
Welcome back to the second half of the Spring Term! We hope you all had a fun half term.
Our Topic this term will be ‘Traditional Tales’. We will be looking at different types of traditional stories including fables, myths and fairy tales.
English: In reading we will continue to focus on developing the children’s comprehension skills. With the SATS approaching, it would be great if the children read their home reading books as much as possible. This will help the children’s reading develop and build their confidence. In writing we will be looking at stories linked to our topic and be practising our SPAG skills.
Maths: As well as refreshing some of the amazing skills we have gained so far, this term we will be looking at properties of shapes and fractions. Through games, we will continue to practise our mental arithmetic skills and times tables.
Science: In Science, we will be learning about plants. We will build on knowledge gained in Year 1, looking at different types of seeds, bulbs and what plants need in order to grow and be healthy.
Geography: This term we will have a student teacher teaching us Geography. We will be comparing different parts of the world, working on our place knowledge and learning about human and physical geographical features.
Art / DT: Art this term will focus on our Science topic of ‘Plants’. We will look at different artists who have completed art- work inspired by plants and flowers, and use different techniques and methods to create our own versions. DT will have links to our Traditional Tales topic.
History: We will look at how different types of traditional stories have been passed down over time, how they are told and reimagined today, where their origins lie and themes within them.
PE: This term we will focus on tennis. Children continue to have lessons with their specialist PE teacher every Friday. PE will take place on a Monday and a Friday. Please ensure your child has their full PE kit in school on Mondays and comes to school wearing their PE kit on Fridays.
Computing: Computing will continue to be taught by Mr O’Neon on Fridays. This will sometimes involve using Purple Mash. All the children have a PM login inside their reading record books if they would like to use Purple Mash at home.
RE: Our topic this term is Judaism. We will look at important stories from the Old Testament and make links to similarities in Christianity, including a focus on these shared texts.
Finally:
· PE is on Monday and Friday. Please can children come into school wearing their P.E kits on Fridays only.
· Please read with your child as much as possible. Writing in their reading record books is helpful. We will try to change books as often as possible. Children are asked every day to take their reading book home from school.
· Please ensure their full school uniform and PE kit is all labelled clearly.
· Please remember to bring a water bottle each day.
· Thank you in advance for your support this term. If you have any questions or queries, please do not hesitate to ask.
Best Wishes,
Mrs Honzik, Mrs Thomson and Miss Godden
