Term 5 Parent Letter – Year 4
Dear Parent/Carer,
I cannot believe we are already on term 5! I hope you all had a lovely Easter break.
Literacy: This term in Literacy year 4 are going to be studying the book ‘Paddington’ by Michael Bond. We are going to be learning more about informal writing and will be producing postcards as well as carrying on our narrative writing. The children will also be increasing their knowledge and understanding on fronted adverbials, inverted commas, apostrophes and expanded noun phrases. In addition, the children will continue with their weekly spellings and daily reading.
Numeracy: In numeracy we are going to be continuing with decimals and will also be learning about money. The ‘Multiplication Tables Check’ in June is fast approaching and this means the children should frequently be learning all their timetables up to 12 x 12. It is important that the children are encouraged to practise them at home through timetable rock stars, songs and games.
Science: This term in science the children are going to be learning about the digestive system. They will learn about the different parts of the digestive system, as well as the functions of each part. The children will also be learning about food chains and the different stages and components.
Geography: This term year 4 are going to be learning about a village in India called Chembakolli. They will be looking at where India is in the world and the surrounding countries and seas, as well as learning about the location of Chembakolli. The children will be exploring the similarities and difference between the people living in Chembakolli and their lives.
RE: In RE the children are going to be learning about Hinduism.
PE: This term in PE the children are going to be doing athletics which will include throwing, jumping and running. On a Friday the children will be taught cricket and continuing with Swimming.
Art: The children are going to look at the role of an illustrator and focusing on Peggy Fortnum’s work in Paddington Bear.
Music: In music the children are going to be learning about composer, ostinati and structure.
French: This terms topic for French is ‘what’s the time?’
PHSE: This terms PHSE is about Citizenship and Economic well-being, which includes looking after money and jobs.
Notes:
PLEASE make sure your child has their FULL PE kit in school at all times and that it is clearly named. PE is a vital part of the curriculum and children hate to miss out when they do not have the correct kit with them.
Homework and Spellings
As always, the children will be asked to complete at least one piece of homework per week, with the option of completing more if they wish. The children now need to hand in a piece of homework by Friday each week.
We will continue to choose six spellings with a focus spelling pattern. We ask that you please continue to encourage them to write out their spellings and complete extra activities at home. The new spellings will be uploaded each week to our Google Classroom and a paper copy in their yellow books. The children will be tested on their spellings each Monday and new spellings will then be set.
Reading and simply enjoying books at home with your child will also further their development. Please would you be able to write in their yellow reading record if they have read, even if it’s a home book.
I hope this will give you a further insight into your child’s education. If you have any questions or queries, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Yours faithfully
Miss Giles
