Computing Week 5 Term 5

Friday 12th May

In Reception, the children focused their learning on the life cycle of a frog. Firstly, the children looked at the tadpoles growing in the classroom. Then, they watched a short video on how the tadpoles would change into frogs. Afterwards, the children decorated and designed their own frogs.

In year 1, the children continued their short series on creating an e-book. This week, the children began adding new pages to the story they started last week. For each page, the children added an animation, to bring the page to life.

In year 2, the children continued a short series on questioning. For this activity, the children had to use a database to find the names of different children and animals, through answering yes or no questions.

In year 3, the children continued a topic on communication. For today’s activity, the children continued sending each other emails. The focus was using the report to teacher button. The children were taught how to report emails, which caused them concern, worry, upset or distress.

In year 4, the children continued their topic on programming. As always, the children began their lesson with online safety, which was carefully explained and discussed with the class. The focus today was using the repeat command. This was a little tricky but the children did really well.

In year 5, the children began a new topic on programming. As always, the children began their lesson with online safety, which was carefully explained and discussed with the class. For this activity, the children had to begin programming a ‘turtle’ with sets of instructions. The children began by choosing their ‘turtle’. Some children chose Pacman, pencils, dragons, bees or a different type of creature. The children then selected their own background on which to program the ‘turtle’. The children began typing short commands such as FD 4 and Bk 3. The children also began applying their understanding of degrees for turning. The children then had the task of creating different shapes. Some children created squares, others rectangles, one child a hexagon and another triangle. One child created steps and another completed a circle.
