Science: Animals, including Humans
It has been an action-packed start to Science in Year 4 this term, as we dove straight into our 'Animals, including Humans' topic with a focus on dental anatomy and digestion. We began by classifying our own teeth, using plasticine models and skull X-rays to compare human teeth to the specialised teeth of herbivores and carnivores. From there, things got very messy as we simulated the entire journey of digestion in one massive mash-up experiment—from crushing 'food' in a bag (the stomach), squeezing it through a long tube (the oesophagus), and finally using a pair of tights and paper towels to model how the small and large intestines absorb nutrients and water. We have now moved on to setting up our dental fair test, investigating the protective power of enamel by leaving model 'teeth' (using egg shells) to soak in different liquids.
