SEND at St Eanswythe’s

We have an open door policy that encourages parents to come and talk to us regarding their children’s progress.

We actively seek to remove the barriers to learning and participation that can hinder or exclude individual pupils, or groups of pupils. This means that equality of opportunity must be a reality for our children.

At St Eanswythe’s Primary we strive to ensure every pupil’s needs are clearly identified and supported at all levels. Quality first teaching with targeted interventions are used to support misconceptions and enhance learning on a daily basis. Teachers provide differentiated learning opportunities for all the children within our school and provide materials appropriate to children’s interests and abilities.

Teaching assistants are deployed very effectively in all classes to work with all pupils, either in small groups or on a one-to-one basis. If a more specific support programme is required, interventions are planned with the teacher and SEND team. The progress within this intervention is closely monitored in order to ensure pupil’s learning is on track. At times more specialised support programmes are required and we work closely with a range of professionals to support a variety of needs. These professionals include Educational Psychologists, Community Paediatricians, Speech therapists, Physiotherapists, Occupational therapists and Specialised teachers in behaviour, learning difficulties and ASC.

As a school we endeavour to support and to develop children’s emotional, social and physical well-being. Our SEND team is supported by our Family Support Lead and Pastoral Lead. We have staff trained in counselling, play therapy, youth mental health first aid and mindfulness.

The school follows the SEND Code of Practice and ensures assessments take place to support statutory assessments. Pupils on the SEND register and with Education Health Care Plans and High Needs Funding are supported closely within school to allow them to develop academically, emotionally and socially.

St Eanswythe’s supports the Local Offer and works closely with Parents and Carers of children and young people with special educational needs and disability, to ensure a range of specialist or targeted service providers are available.

Speech, language and communication support

 

Our school works to support speech, language and communication with support from our NHS link speech & language therapist Alys Mathers as well as specialist teachers. Your child may come into contact with Alys Mathers within their classroom or around school. The SENCo Louise Thompson will have regular meetings with Alys Mathers to discuss our school’s provision. If you have any concerns about your child’s speech, language or communication skills, please speak to your child’s class teacher in the first instance. If we have discussed a specific concern with you about your child’s speech, language or communication, or you have raised a concern, we will decide together whether to discuss this with our link therapist. You will be kept informed of any plans to support your child.
