Ducklings have been for another fantastic Beach School session. With the tide lower than usual, we were able to take a different route, walking through the boat docking bay and around to Sunny Sands, which created lots of excitement and curiosity.
Along the way, we talked about beach safety, including the warning signs for soft mud, and how to keep ourselves safe in this environment. When we reached the rocky area, the children explored seaweed attached to the rocks and were fascinated by the tiny bubbles on it. We learned that these bubbles are filled with air and help the seaweed float up towards the sunlight so it can grow.
The children also enjoyed looking closely at limpets and barnacles, gently touching them and describing their rough textures. They were interested to learn that these creatures can move around when the tide is high.
On the sand, there was a lot of excitement as the children discovered a wide range of shells, sharing and comparing their finds with one another. We then walked to our usual meeting point and took some quiet time to listen to the sounds of the sea and the birds overhead.
To finish, the children worked together to build even bigger sandcastles and dig deeper tunnels than last week. They loved using chalk to decorate inside their tunnels with bright, colourful patterns. Although the rock pool was quiet and no crabs were found, a few children were thrilled to discover fossils.
Another lovely session full of exploration, teamwork, and curiosity.
