This week we have been learning all about how the Marathon got its name. The children learnt that in 490 BCE, the Persians fought the Athenians at the Battle of Marathon. Despite being outnumbered by the Persians, the Athenians achieved an impressive victory. This was a significant battle as it paused the Persian expansion in Greece.
Sparta and Athens were enemies, but they joined together to fight the Persians. They became allies. King Darius thought it would be easy to conquer Greece, but he was wrong. The Battle of Marathon is still remembered today with a 26 mile run.
I managed to sneak into unicycle club and have a little go myself. I can tell you it is not as easy as it looks. The children are all getting very good now with lots of them able to ride with a bit of help.
