Year 4 Canterbury Roman Museum Trip

Year 4 set off on their trip to the Canterbury Roman Museum and The Beaney House of Art & Knowledge — and what an exciting journey back in time it was!

At the Roman Museum, the children got hands-on with history, beginning with the chance to create their own Roman coins using real metal and hammers. They thoroughly enjoyed stamping their own designs and learning about ancient Roman currency. Afterwards, things got a bit more action-packed as we tried out a Roman slingshot, using it to knock down model buildings — a fun way to learn about Roman warfare and tactics!

Next, the children discovered how Romans made their own flour. Using a replica stone mill, they saw just how much effort it took to grind grain by hand — a far cry from modern technology! This helped them understand how everyday life looked in Roman times and how important food production was to survival.

After a few fascinating hours, we made our way to The Beaney, where the children became real-life historians. They closely examined Roman artefacts, using their knowledge and curiosity to guess what each object might have been used for. It was wonderful to see their investigative skills in action! With a bit of free time afterwards, the children explored other parts of the museum before sitting down for a well-earned lunch break.

The entire day was a fantastic mix of learning, hands-on fun, and historical discovery. The children were beautifully behaved throughout — including on the bus journey there and back — and represented the school brilliantly. Well done, Year 4!
