We ended the term in the most special way with our annual Carol and Christingle Service, held on Friday afternoon at St Mary and St Eanswythe’s Church.
As we arrived, families were welcomed into the church by our school Christmas choir, who have spent much of December spreading festive cheer throughout the local community. The choir have been visiting care homes and supermarkets, sharing popular Christmas songs and traditional hymns, and it was a joy to see them open our service with such confidence and warmth.
In the lead-up to the service, children across the school had been practising carols and songs to perform for their parents, families and loved ones. The service showcased a wonderful range of talents: some children performed solo singing lines, verses and songs, others played instruments including the djembe drum and piano, and bells rang out beautifully throughout the church. Key Stage 2 performed a French carol they have been learning in their weekly French lessons, adding a lovely cultural dimension to the afternoon.
The day before the service, the children carefully made their Christingles, ready for one of the most magical moments of the afternoon. During Silent Night, the first verses were beautifully sung by a Year 6 duet and also performed as a solo in Persian, creating a truly reflective atmosphere. As the lights were dimmed, Key Stage 2 children held lit candles, while Key Stage 1 children joined in safely using glow sticks. Seeing the soft glow spread across the church while hearing the children sing was a truly special moment and a perfect way to mark the end of term.
It was a meaningful and joyful celebration that reflected the spirit of Christmas and the strong sense of community within our school.
We would like to wish all our children, parents, families, friends and loved ones a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from all the staff at St. Eanswythe’s School.
