Green Fingers in Ducklings 🌱

Over the past few weeks, our Ducklings class have been getting stuck in with some hands-on science as we learn all about plants and living things. With our sleeves rolled up and a little bit of mess along the way, we’ve been busy planting cress and runner bean seeds and watching the magic of nature at work!
First up, we carefully planted our runner beans in small plastic bags. Each child gently watered their seed before we taped them to the classroom windows. Why? Because seeds need sunlight, water and warmth to grow, our windows were the perfect sunny spot to help them sprout. It was like a mini greenhouse on display!
The children have been brilliant at following the planting instructions and have loved checking each day to see which seeds had germinated. Some beans had a little too much love (and water!), and a few didn’t get quite enough, but we’ve been learning that this is all part of the process. Science in action!
Later on, we moved some of our successful seedlings into larger pots out on the playground. We’re hoping that, with a bit of sunshine and care, we’ll be able to grow real runner beans we can eventually pick and maybe even taste.
We also had great fun planting cress seeds which are perfect for observing speedy sprouting and seeing roots and shoots develop almost overnight.
Through these activities, we’ve been exploring key scientific questions like:
What do seeds need to grow?
Why is sunlight so important?
What happens if we give too much or too little water?
The children have shown so much curiosity and care, and it’s been a joy to watch them become young gardeners and scientists at the same time.
We can’t wait to see how tall our beans will grow!
