Materials in Year One

In Science this term we are learning about Materials.

Last week, in Year 1, we had a Recycling Relay to learn about recycling materials.

There was a mix of recyclable items at one end of the hall and labelled bins at the other. One by one, the children had to run to pick an item and put it in the correct bin.

It was exciting to see everyone thinking carefully about where each item should go while having lots of fun running around. By the end, all the recycling was sorted correctly, and the children showed they understood which materials can be recycled.

The activity was a great way to learn about recycling while being active and working together!

Today in Year 1 we have been learning all about the properties of materials. We talked about different materials such as wood, metal, plastic, fabric and glass, then explored what makes each one special.

The children then had a go at creating their own posters, choosing a range of materials and writing words to describe their properties. We used lots of descriptive language like hard, soft, smooth, rough, bendy, strong, transparent and opaque. The children enjoyed touching and talking about the materials before deciding how best to describe them.

This was a very hands-on and practical lesson, and the children were fully engaged throughout. They loved taking ownership of their posters and were proud to share their ideas with their classmates. It was great to see them using scientific vocabulary confidently and explaining their thinking.
