Plinth People

In Art last term, Year 4 have been exploring how the way we present artwork can completely change how it is viewed and understood. We discussed how, when we create art for others to see, presentation really matters. This led us to investigate the role of the plinth in sculpture and how it can elevate, frame and even add meaning to a piece of work.

The children were set the challenge of creating their own “Plinth People” by building dynamic figures that would stand proudly on a base. Starting with a single piece of wire, they carefully shaped and bent it to form expressive human poses. They thought carefully about body position and movement, considering how small changes in stance could suggest different emotions or actions.

Once their figures were formed, the children began transforming the wire structures by wrapping them in long, thin strips of cloth and wool. The fabric was secured with small knots and, where needed, a touch of glue. This process required patience and precision, but the results were fantastic.

The finished sculptures are full of character and energy, and it has been wonderful to see how thoughtfully the children have considered both form and presentation. Year 4 should be very proud of their creative “Plinth People.”
