Last term, in our Year 3 art lessons, students had the exciting opportunity to create mod-roc sculptures inspired by the beloved illustrations of Quentin Blake, which feature characters from Roald Dahl’s timeless books, such as The BFG, Willy Wonka and Alfie from Esio Trot. The children started by constructing an armature out of newspaper and masking tape, carefully focusing on capturing the distinctive features of these iconic characters. They paid particular attention to the exaggerated, playful proportions and unique facial expressions that Quentin Blake is known for, ensuring their sculptures reflected the lively, whimsical style of the illustrations. This hands-on activity not only allowed the students to engage with the world of Roald Dahl’s characters in a creative and tactile way, but also helped them explore the process of sculpting and bringing their favourite characters to life.
