Year 3 Cave Art

During Term 1, the Year 3 children have been exploring charcoal in their Friday art sessions. This term's key concepts were: • That when we draw we can use gestural marks to make work. • That when we draw we can use the expressive marks we make to create a sense of drama. • That when we draw we can move

around. • That when we draw we can use light to make our subject matter more dramatic, and we can use the qualities of the material (charcoal) to capture the drama.

Their final piece was to work collaboratively in their group to create a Stone Age Cave. They did so well and were exploring how the sugar paper could be crumpled to add texture and layered to add depth. The children enjoyed moving the charcoal in different directions, with different pressure and also holding it in different positions to change the effect of the charcoal markings. The children also used white chalk to add highlights. The Charcoal was very fun to work with as it was so messy and the children loved getting their hands covered to add handprints and fingerprints to their caves. Well done Year 3, you were fabulous!
