Bioplastics

Ducklings class had a super exciting science session with Victoria’s mum.
We learned all about plastics and discovered that they are used in lots of everyday things. We talked about why plastics can be really useful because they are strong and can last a long time, but also why they can be harmful, especially to animals and our oceans, because they do not break down easily.
Then came the fun part. We made our very own bioplastic. First, we mixed cornflour with water. Next, we added a little oil and some food colouring to make it bright and fun. After giving it a really good stir, we carefully heated the mixture in the microwave. Like magic, our runny liquid turned into a solid and we had created bioplastic.
At the end, we talked about why bioplastics can be better for the environment. Unlike many plastics made from fossil fuels, bioplastics can break down much more quickly, which helps reduce harm to wildlife and our planet.
What a fantastic hands on science adventure, thank you!
