As part of our Healthy Me topic in PSHE this term, today Year 1 have been learning all about how to keep their teeth clean and why this is so important for our overall health and wellbeing.
With Mrs Semple, the children explored the role of the dentist and how they help us to look after our teeth. We shared our own experiences of visiting the dentist, helping to build confidence and understanding around these important check-ups.
During our class discussion, the children drew on their own knowledge and experiences to explain why brushing our teeth is so important, and what might happen if we don't brush our teeth. They confidently shared ideas such as teeth turning brown or yellow, needing fillings, falling out, keeping our breath fresh and avoiding that ‘fluffy’ feeling. Some children even reminded us that the tooth fairy prefers to collect clean, shiny teeth! We then explored these ideas together as a class, discussing why they matter and reinforcing the children’s own understanding.
To bring our learning to life, the classroom was transformed into a mini dental surgery. The children took turns being the dentist and the patient, using our giant model teeth and toothbrush to practise brushing carefully and thoroughly. This hands-on activity supported children in understanding how to take responsibility for their own hygiene, linking closely to our learning about keeping our bodies healthy and making positive choices.
It was wonderful to see such enthusiasm and confidence as the children developed their understanding of how to care for themselves in a fun and meaningful way!
