This Week in Maths for Year One: Exploring Numbers Through Play and Discovery!

We've had a fun week in Maths, full of hands-on learning and meaningful play-based activities. Here's a little insight into what we've been up to each day:

Monday – Sorting Biscuits! 🍪

We kicked off the week with a fun and tasty maths activity! Pupils explored the concept of sorting by grouping biscuits based on different features. Most children chose to sort by colour or shape, while some even began thinking about size. This task helped us practise early skills in classification.

Tuesday – Counting Around the Playground 🔍

On Tuesday, we took our learning outside! In pairs, we worked on counting fluently to 10 using an activity sheet that turned our playground into a counting adventure. We hunted for different objects and recorded how many of each we found. This activity supported both number fluency and observational skills, while also encouraging teamwork and discussion.

Wednesday – Working with Cubes 🧊

Wednesday’s lesson focused on one-to-one correspondence and number recognition. Using 10 cubes each, we paired up with a friend. Partner 1 would say a number between 1 and 10, and Partner 2 had to count out the matching number of cubes. This activity helped reinforce careful counting and understanding of quantity.

Thursday – Ladybird Spot Investigation 🐞

We ended the week with a fascinating mini-investigation! Using magnifying glasses, we examined pictures of ladybirds with fading spots. We had to carefully count the number of spots on each one, then represent that number using cubes. After that, we recorded our results on a worksheet. This activity helped build number representation skills and gave us a chance to explore maths through nature and inquiry.
