Over the last couple of weeks, Year 5 have been to Beach School led by Mr. O’Neon. They have shown a good understanding, awareness and appreciation of the local beauty that Folkstone has to offer.
Last week, Year 5 spent a beautiful morning at Sunny Sands. The children were able to take part in rock pooling and they had some very interesting finds! They found various types of crabs and barnacles. Some children enjoyed building wonderful creations in the sand and others enjoyed a little paddle in the sea.
This week, we ventured to the pebble beach near the harbour arm. The lesson focus this week was 'Taking care of our world'. Mr. O'Neon began by telling us about the significant dangers of plastics and how it is seriously affecting our oceans. The children then had an activity to work out how long different items take to disintegrate. The children (and adults) were extremely shocked to find that plastic bags take up to 10 years to disintegrate and some plastic bottles can take up to 450 years! It was an extremely eye opening task and it encouraged a lot of discussion on the future of our wonderful world. The lesson finished with a beach clear up and in the short time frame we had, we found a whole sack of rubbish which included cans, fishing hooks and food packaging!
It really was an interesting and thought provoking session. Thank you Mr. O'Neon!
