Flying Birds

Year 3 have finally finished their fantastic flying birds and we could not be prouder of them. They worked incredibly hard on this project last term and their perseverance has truly paid off.
We began by carefully studying photographs of British garden birds, looking closely at colours, shapes and features. The children then designed their own special bird for a Minpin to ride on, taking inspiration from the beautiful illustrations in Roald Dahl’s The Minpins. Their sketchbooks were full of imaginative ideas and thoughtful details.
When it came to sculpting, each child started with a fist sized lump of air drying clay. They kneaded, rolled and shaped it into an egg like body, carefully pinching to form a head, beak and tail. There was some brilliant concentration as they smoothed and moulded their creations. While the clay was still soft, I added a twisted aluminium wire hoop so the birds could hang and truly look like they were flying.
Once dry, the children brought their birds to life using tissue paper collage, layering colours and textures beautifully. Finally, they added wings and googly eyes, giving each bird its own personality.
The children fully engaged with every stage of this project and showed real creativity and determination throughout. They were so proud of their finished birds and quite rightly so. I am incredibly proud of them too. Well done Year 3.
