This term in Year 3, the children have been exploring mixed media in their art lessons and have produced some truly wonderful and imaginative pieces. They have been learning how artists can combine art and craft by bringing together painting and sewing, and how using different materials such as paint and thread allows us to take advantage of their unique qualities to build an image. The class have also discovered that skills can transfer across media, for example using mark making techniques from drawing within their stitching, and that materials do not always have to be used in traditional ways. We can be creative and reinvent how we use them.
For their final pieces, the children created land inspired abstract artwork using calico fabric as their base. They carefully selected colour palettes and explored different brushstrokes, thinking about line, direction and the variety of marks they could create with paint. To complete their work, they added embroidery using needle and thread, building further detail and texture through stitched mark making. This stage required a great deal of patience and perseverance, and the children showed fantastic focus and determination throughout.
We are incredibly proud of the creativity and skill the class have demonstrated, especially their impressive sewing abilities. Their finished pieces are vibrant, thoughtful and full of personality, and it has been a joy to see their confidence grow as artists.
